Choosing Paint Colors
Choosing the colors you’ll use for your house is a big decision. And the colors do more than affect curb appeal.
Dark colors are best for colder climates like Canton MI.
The Department of Energy’s Cooling your Home Naturally report says dark colors can absorb 70-90 percent of the sun’s radiant energy. The radiant energy is transferred into the home adding a few degrees of warmth.
You’d think that the colors you paint your home would be your own personal choice. But that’s hardly the case.
If you have a homeowners’ association there might be rules about the colors you may use. Check before you buy your paint.
And think about your neighbors. Would you want to see a chartreuse house standing out among all the gray and barn red ones every time you drove down the street?
When you choose colors think about curb appeal, resale value, and colors that will make you feel welcome and happy to be home. All three are more important than whether the paint’s on sale.
And take a look at your neighbors’ houses, too. Everyone will be happier if the colors of your house blend in or contrast with theirs.
Don’t forget to include accent colors for the door, shutters, and moldings.
Something else to consider is the existing architectural features of the house. What colors are the roof, the fence, and pavers leading from the driveway to the front door? You’ll want colors that blend with them.
Getting Ready For Your Painter
Before your residential painters arrive you have some work to do.
First, ask questions. Will the painters power wash and sand your house? If not, arrange to have that done before they come. Your paint job will last longer if the house is clean when it’s painted.
It’s also a good idea to walk around the house with the painter and look for any areas that need special attention.
Before the exterior painting begins, move everything out of the way, including toys, lawn equipment, patio and deck furniture, potted plants, and even your car. You don’t want your painters to waste time moving things when they could be working.
Stay out of the way, too. Keep the kids and pets inside or arrange for them to go to a friend’s house so the painters don’t have to worry about them getting hurt or into a can of paint.
Should You Do It Yourself?
There are pros and cons to a DYI exterior paint job. But for many people, the cons far outweigh the pros.
How do you feel about standing at the top of a very tall ladder? Have you ever tackled a big paint job yourself? How did it turn out? Are you knowledgeable about the properties of paint? How much time do you have to spend painting a house?
It usually takes a crew of two or three people three days to paint an average size house. If you’re going it alone, it could take considerably longer. And don’t forget, you’ll have to power wash and sand the house and make any repairs first.
But the biggest pro – saving money – could turn out to be the biggest con. If you botch the job or run out of time or interest, you’ll have to hire someone to finish it for you. Or even more expensive, the painter might have to start again.
